Sacred Salmon Ceremony
Salmon River
Saturday, May 24
2pm at Spring Bar (12 miles upriver of Riggins).
This ceremony is an aesthetic and spiritual appreciation of the annual return of the Salmon Nation to the Salmon River. The ceremony dates back to the first people of the land and is conducted each year by Horace Axtell, a traditional Nez Perce spiritual leader.
Bring a life jacket if you would like to take part in the eddy float welcoming the Salmon. Room on boats is limited. People are welcome to bring their own boats. Shoreline spectatorship is also welcome.
After the float, attendees will create a Salmon Circle above the shoreline, and people are welcome to share their feelings of thanks to the Salmon.
A Potluck Friendship Feast will culminate the event. People are asked to bring (wild if possible) game, fish, food, and drink (but please leave alcohol and pets at home).
